Equitable, Personalized, and Cost-Effective Health Benefits: Lessons from Turn Community Health

When Brenda Harris, a Human Resource Director, was presented with the renewal for her group health insurance, she was faced with a crunch. She knew in an instant that she needed to find a better way to provide health benefits to her hard-working team of 400 caregivers.

Turn Community Health, Utah’s largest provider of disability services, is a nonprofit that facilitates important community connections through residential services, dynamic art-centered day programs, and supported living in affordable housing.

Like many residential care organizations, an aging workforce that pours their energy into the health and wellbeing of others was contributing to skyrocketing health insurance costs for the company.

With locations across the state and a mix of part time and full time employees, their group health plan was falling short in another way—employees in the southern Utah programs had to pay more to be on the group plan than employees in other parts of the state, causing a disparity in health benefits.

When Brenda worked with her broker, her leadership team, and Take Command to roll out an ICHRA, several things happened at once:

  1. Turn effectively put an end to uncontrollable health benefits costs.

  2. ICHRA helped ensure fair and equitable benefits for the team.

  3. Personalized health benefits resulted in a 96% satisfaction score among employees.

  4. ICHRA has helped boost recruitment and retention—they’ve had a lot more applicants since rolling out their new benefit.

This coming open enrollment will mark Brenda’s third year of ICHRA, making her a seasoned veteran of this modern benefits strategy. Come hear her story—she’s a masterclass in rolling out a new benefit with proper education and a wealth of knowledge in best practices for ICHRA.

Key Takeaways:

  • How to identify your group health plan pain points and assess whether ICHRA is a good fit
  • How to leverage ICHRA to make health benefits more equitable among your employees
  • How to educate employees on new health benefits solution

About Turn Community Services

Formerly known as Project TURN, we were founded in 1973 by a group of parents who wanted to improve program services for adult children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. TURN began by opening residential programs in Ogden and Bountiful. Individuals with disabilities could live in a traditional home setting, participate in community activities, and have an integrated, more independent social interaction experience.

More than forty years later, TURN Community Services now provides services to more than 850 individuals with developmental disabilities in Utah. We provide services across the state from Brigham City to St. George, UT. We offer a full range of services, including day programs, residential living services, art center programs, summer camps, and supported employment opportunities.
